Purpose. To investigate the characterization and distribution of LCs in normal rat corneal epithelium.
Methods. Normal and inflamed rat corneal tissues were stained for CD11c, MHC class II, B7 and CD3.
Results. The expression of the activation markers CD80 and CD86 by MHC class II+ LCs was present in the limbal basal epithelium after corneal inflammation.
Conclusions. MHC class II+ LCs in the limbal basal epithelium can be stimulated to proliferate in response to the inflammatory reaction of the central corneal epithelium.
