Objective Despite the fact that pediatric ocular trauma is an important worldwide cause of preventable blindness, scant information is available regarding its epidemiology outside the United States and other developed countries. This study was to describe the characteristics of epidemiology and medical care associated with non-fatal pediatric ( 17 years or less ) eye injury-related hospitalization in the Chaoshan region of China.
Methods A retrospective study of ocular trauma cases admitted to three tertiary hospitals from January 2001 to December 2010 was performed. The extracted data included demographic characteristics, the cause and treatment of injury, clinical diagnoses and medical care characteristics, duration of hospitalization and follow-up.
Results The study included a total of 1035 injured eyes from 1018 patients over the 10-year period, 560 ( 54.1% ) open globe injuries, 402 ( 38.8% ) closed globe injuries, 10 ( 1.0% ) chemical injuries and 8 ( 0.8% ) thermal injuries. The average annual hospitalization rate due to pediatric eye injuries in the Chaoshan region was 3.7 per 100 ,000 ( 95% CI, 3.6~3.8 ) in persons aged 17 years or less. The mean age of the patients was 9.2±4.4 years with a   male-to-female ratio of 3.3:1 ( P = 0.007 ). The Children aged 6 to 8 years had the highest percentage ( 22.1% ) of hospitalizations. Injury occurred most frequently at home ( 73.1% ) and school ( 9.8% ). Open globe injuries accounted for the largest percentage ( 60.8% ) of total hospital charges.
Conclusions: Educating parents and children about the potential hazard for eye injuries at home is an important public health goal. Open globe injuries were the most serious and costly financial burden for pediatric eye injury–related hospitalization.
